From Around the Web: 20 Fabulous Infographics About socio economics issues
For those who are interested in a broad overview of the current economic challenges of the world, a good place to start is our new book, The Three Levels of Self-Awareness, by John Mackey. It is a great introduction to the topic and one that I highly recommend.
What’s particularly interesting is that Mackey (founder of the Internet Archive) finds that our level of self-awareness varies from person to person. Mackey says this is due to the wide variety of social, cultural, economic, and political factors that contribute to our self-awareness. So, if you’re not interested in the political, economic, and social aspects of the problem, I’d recommend checking out the rest of the book.
One of the more interesting questions Mackey brings up is, “Does self-awareness matter to the general population?” The short answer is no. There are some things that society cares about (education, health, etc.), but most people are just fine and have no trouble knowing who to vote for, what to do in certain situations, etc. In fact, it makes sense that most of society would be fine and unaware of their own life choices.
But, what if everybody could know? What if everyone were “aware” of the choices they make? Well, it doesn’t take much to see how this would be a disaster. First, we would all be living in a society where the choices made by the majority of people were not taken into account. When you make a decision, you have the right to know why you made it.
If everyone knew why they made the decision, they’d know what they were doing. A person that doesn’t know what they’re doing would be making an impossible choice. Everyone would know they were wrong to act, and they would know why. Imagine the following situation.
I am in a very important meeting where my boss is concerned that I have lost my job. I am in a meeting where everyone seems to be against me, but I have a friend who is my boss and he has told me that if my job is gone, I will not be able to afford to buy a car for my family. My friend also told me that the only way to have my family pay for a car is to have my job go away.
In the real world, the same thing would probably happen. People would likely look for the cause of their problems and attempt to correct them. However, in our world, we’re not allowed to do that in the name of justice, so we have to just ignore people’s problems. This is why it’s so hard to achieve social progress.
The idea of a society where you can’t ask for justice or make demands on the government for a problem is a myth. When people are denied basic rights, they will then demand their rights back, and once they get their rights back, they will be more likely to demand more rights.
Social progress is about not giving up on your basic rights. If a group of people are denied basic rights and demands, they’re more likely to demand their rights back, and once you have your rights back, you’re more likely to demand more. And this is the point where people start to get angry.
Now one of the things society can do to help is to address the underlying causes of the problem. If the people who are denying basic rights have economic issues, they will demand the government give them money. The government for a problem is a myth. When people are denied basic rights, they will then demand their rights back, and once they have their rights back, they will be more likely to demand more rights. And this is the point where people start to get angry.
