I’ve been in supply chain consulting for a long time. Most of the time, people are asking me about why I like what I do. They want to know how to do what they do. There are also a lot of folks who ask me how I find my job, because you know, I’m the guy who sits in meetings and drinks coffee while they talk about how they are looking for work.
There are a lot of reasons why we should care about supply chain consulting in some way. We love to spend time with our customers, and a good supply chain consulting firm can give us insight into the products they’re buying and what they’re doing with them. As well we love to talk about how we can use the knowledge that we gain from working with suppliers to improve things for ourselves.
Supply chain consulting firms have a lot of great reasons to care about our industry. As I work with a supply chain consulting firm, it is usually the only time that I get to see the world from my customers’ point of view. They have the opportunity to talk to the people who make, sell, and buy the things they buy.
As a supply chain consultant, I get to see the world from the customer perspective. I get to talk to people who have never seen a product being made before. A lot of times I have to explain the technical terms to someone who is a little lost and confused. I get to talk to people who don’t have the time to read a 500 page manual.
I think my favorite part of the video was the one where I go from talking to a customer about some strange plant that has been found in the desert to talking to someone who used to be a customer. This is a guy who got a new job on Amazon.com and he has been using the product he got to upgrade his home’s heating system. He has had the product for two months and still uses it almost every day.
The video has several key takeaways: 1) For the first 50% of the video, you can assume that the product is safe and sound. 2) You can’t necessarily assume that the customer has any idea what they are talking about. 3) All the information in the video is from Amazon.com, which is a major brand, so it’s likely that the customer has been using the same product for a while.
Like a lot of new businesses, most supply chain consulting firms are in the business of filling out forms, but not really understanding how they work. Amazon.com is a well known, well known brand in the business of selling other companies’ products. Amazon.com is probably the most well known brand in almost all of the world, so any questions about the product don’t necessarily mean anything.
The problem is that most supply chain consulting firms don’t really know what a business is. They fill out a form and are told that a company’s products are sold through a “distribution channel.” Amazon.com is a distribution channel. The problem is that Amazon.com isn’t a business. Amazon.com is probably a brand. Amazon.com is probably the best known, and best recognized, company in the world. But Amazon.com is not really anything.
That’s why supply chain consulting firms should be called “consulting business” because they arent really businesses. They are really marketing agencies. Or marketing firms. Or sales organizations. Or, as I have seen them termed, “marketing consultancies.” Or, as I have seen them termed, “supply chain consulting firms.
